Benzodiazepines and antidepressants have been shown to change responses to unfairness; however, the effects of their combined use on unfairness evaluation are unknown. This study examines the effects of concomitant benzodiazepines and antidepressants long-term use on the evaluation of fair and unfair offers. To analyze behavioral changes on responses to unfairness, we compared the performance of medicated participants and healthy controls in the Ultimatum Game, both in the proposer and in the respondent role. The results showed that long-term psychotropic users (...) had the worse economic strategy by accepting less offers than control subjects. However, in the proposer role, the unfair offers made by participants were similar between groups. The present results suggest that long-term use of psychotropic medication, specifically the combination of benzodiazepines and antidepressants, may increase the sensitivity to unfairness, resulting in higher rejection rates in conditions where this strategy is the most disadvantageous. There are very few (published) accounts of editorial misconduct, and those that do exist are almost exclusively focused on medicine-related areas. In the present article we detail a case of editorial misconduct in a rather underexplored domain, the social sciences. This case demonstrates that although legal systems provide different instruments of protection to avoid, compensate for, and punish misconduct on the part of journal editors, the social and economic power unbalance between authors and publishers suggests the importance of alternative solutions (...) before or instead of bringing a lawsuit to court. It puts forward strong arguments in favour of the need for effective regulatory bodies so as to achieve and maintain a culture of research integrity by all involved in the process. (shrink)

Angesichts der angeblichen axiologischen Neutralität des Wissens, die in Teilen der Wissenschaft proklamiert wird, bieten seit langem mehrere philosophische Strömungen verschiedene Darstellungen der internen Verbindung zwischen Wissen und Machtverhältnissen. Diese reiche Geschichte umfasst Beiträge u. a. aus dem Poststrukturalismus, dem Marxismus, der Kritischen Theorie, den Decolonial und Critical Race Studies, dem Feminismus und den Theorien der epistemischen Ungerechtigkeit. Trotz ihrer vielen theoretischen Divergenzen stimmen sie alle mit der grundlegenden diagnostischen Prämisse überein, dass Machtungleichheiten eine bedeutsame Rolle bei der Definition dessen (...) spielen, was als „Wissen“ zählt, und dass infolgedessen sozial und politisch unterdrückte Gruppen dazu neigen, auch im Bereich der epistemischen Praktiken wie der Systematisierung, Legitimierung und Übertragung von Wissen unterdrückt zu werden. Diese Kritiker:innen einer positivistischen Objektivität des Wissens haben jedoch sehr unterschiedliche Ansichten über die Wurzeln, die Auswirkungen und das Funktionieren der Verbindung zwischen epistemischen Praktiken und Machtungleichheiten. In diesem Beitrag wird eine dieser Differenzen untersucht, nämlich in Bezug auf die Frage: Bedeutet soziale und politische Unterdrückung notwendigerweise, dass die betroffenen Subjekte im Vergleich zu privilegierten Gruppen in einer schlechteren Position sind, um ihre Unterdrückung zu verstehen und ihr Widerstand zu leisten? Zwei möglichen Antworten auf diese Frage werden hier unter Rekurs auf eine Gegenüberstellung von Miranda Frickers Theorie der epistemischen Ungerechtigkeit einerseits und der feministischen Standpunkttheorie von Dorothy Smith andererseits untersucht. Während der erstgenannte Ansatz Unterdrückung vor allem als epistemisch und politisch schwächend ansieht, betrachtet der letztere die einzigartige Position der Unterdrückten als potenzielle Quelle von Wissen und politischem Handeln. Diese Gegenüberstellung wird eine Kritik einseitiger Darstellungen der Erfahrung von Unterdrückung ermöglichen. Eine Vermittlung zwischen den Polen dieses Gegensatzes wird anschließend durch das Konzept der Verwundbarkeit versucht. Um angesichts der Mehrdeutigkeit des Konzepts genauer zu bestimmen, was mit „Verwundbarkeit“ gemeint ist, wird eine analytische Unterscheidung zwischen Verwundbarkeit als einerseits konstitutiv und andererseits kontingent getroffen. Die Hypothese ist, dass ein vielschichtiges Verständnis von Verwundbarkeit – zeitgleich als kontingentes Risiko der Unterwerfung unter die Fremdheit und als konstitutive Öffnung zum Anderssein – ein wichtiges konzeptionelles Instrument sein kann, um die epistemischen und politischen Ambiguitäten sozialer Ungerechtigkeiten zu erfassen. Georg Lukács was one of the most important philosophers of the twentieth century, his early Marxist work History and Class Consciousness (HCC) of 1923 being considered a hallmark of Critical Theory. But does it still offer, one century after its first publication, productive tools to analyze capitalist societies? To answer this question, we must first untangle the conceptual labyrinth in which the book’s main categories have been enmeshed. To contribute to this end, this paper examines the cogency of Lukács’s later (...) self-criticism (implicit in The Young Hegel and explicit in his 1967 critical preface to HCC) that his early concept of reification conflates the phenomena of alienation and objectification and thereby leads to an acritical and idealist view of capitalism. Our conclusion is that the self-criticism does not hold insofar as the theoretical framework developed in HCC involves an approach to the relation between subject and object that is much more sophisticated than understanding reification merely as the former turning into the latter. A notória seção da Fenomenologia do espírito sobre a figura do senhor e do servo tem inspirado diversas tradições da filosofia social e política desde Hegel. Este artigo explora duas variantes interpretativas centrais dessa seção: a agonística, popularizada por Alexandre Kojève, enfatizando a luta de vida ou morte, e a reconciliatória, focada no reconhecimento recíproco. Como as duas leituras, embora opostas, encontram respaldo no texto hegeliano, propomos a hipótese de que isso se deve ao modo de apresentação da Fenomenologia, que (...) alterna entre as perspectivas da consciência natural e filosófica. Defendemos, então, que estas devem ser consideradas em sua interdependência a fim de evitar interpretações unilaterais. As apropriações críticas da “dialética do senhor e do escravo” feitas por Simone de Beauvoir e Frantz Fanon são mobilizadas, finalmente, para iluminar a ideia de que apreender a história como ela é experienciada é tão vital quanto descrevê-la como ela aparece “para nós”, filósofos. With respect to De Dreu and Gross's article, we comment on the psychological functions for attack and defense, focusing on associations between individual differences in psychopathic personality traits and the behavioral patterns observed in attack-defense conflicts. We highlight the dimensional nature of psychopathy and formulate hypothetical associations between distinct traits, their different behavioral outcomes, and associated brain mechanisms.

Introduction: The aim of this review was to systematically synthesize the published literature describing the psychological and behavioral correlates of recreational running in adults, defined as running for leisure, with or without a competitive component.Methods: Quantitative research published in peer-reviewed journals until January 2021 were included. Studies were identified through MEDLINE, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science and were included in this review if they were aimed at recreational running, included general adult samples, and assessed psychological or behavioral correlates of (...) recreational running.Results: Fifty-six articles reporting 58 studies met the eligibility criteria and were included. There were 27 cross-sectional studies, 12 longitudinal studies, and 19 trials. Twenty-eight studies assessed antecedents of running behavior, and 25 studies used running behavior as treatment or predictor of a given effect or outcome. Four studies examined both predictors and outcomes of running. Thirty-one studies showed poor quality, while 20 had fair and 7 good quality. Motives were the most frequently studied antecedent of running behavior, and results suggest that the highest-ranked or more prevalent motives were physical health, psychological motives, and personal achievement. Additionally, perceived control, attitude toward running, intention and subjective norms, self-efficacy, and social support may have also played a role in the adoption of recreational running. Moreover, improvements in mood and well-being were the most frequently reported positive outcomes of running. Reductions in depression, anxiety, and stress were also reported in included studies.Discussion: To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review on this topic. The identification of behavioral and psychological correlates of recreational running across populations can contribute to inform and guide a public policy agenda, focused on helping people sustain regular physical activity, through a modality they have chosen and appear to enjoy.Systematic Review Registration:https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?RecordID=68954, identifier: CRD42017068954. Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is one of the most widely used tools to assess economic decision-making. However, the research tradition on aging and the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) has been mainly focused on the overall performance of older adults in relation to younger or clinical groups, remaining unclear whether older adults are capable of learning along the task. We conducted a meta-analysis to examine older adults’ decision-making on the IGT, to test the effects of aging on reversal learning (45 studies) (...) and to provide normative data on total and block net scores (55 studies). From the accumulated empirical evidence, we found an average total net score of 7.55 (± 25.9). We also observed a significant reversal learning effect along the blocks of the IGT, indicating that older adults inhibit the prepotent response towards immediately attractive options associated with high losses, in favor of initially less attractive options associated with long-run profit. During block 1, decisions of older adults led to a negative gambling net score, reflecting the expected initial pattern of risk-taking. However, the shift towards more safe options occurred between block 2 (small-to-medium effect size) and blocks 3, 4, 5 (medium-to-large effect size). These main findings highlight that older adults are able to move from the initial uncertainty, when the possible outcomes are unknown, to decisions based on risk, when the outcomes are learned and may be used to guide future adaptive decision-making. o objetivo basilar do presente artigo é mostrar como a abordagem das proposições fulcrais como regras define a estratégia de Wittgenstein contra o ceticismo e, por conseguinte, é a característica principal que o diferencia de Moore na abordagem do problema. Para Moore, o cético deve ser levado a sério, havendo a necessidade da filosofia em respondê-lo, adotando assim uma estratégia positiva de resposta (no sentido não clássico de prova). Wittgenstein, por sua vez, mostra que o cético se autorrefuta, não havendo (...) a necessidade da filosofia em respondê-lo, adotando uma estratégia negativa de resposta, assim dissolvendo o problema. A partir da análise do conceito de regra em Da Certeza, mostraremos como Wittgenstein estrutura sua dissolução do problema cético em um possível novo tipo de regra que é melhor alinhada a uma leitura holista do Da Certeza. Contudo, para defender a interpretação holista das proposições fulcrais torna-se importante mostrar a conexão entre o holismo de Quine e as observações contidas em OC, pois o holismo é tradicionalmente relacionado às considerações do filósofo norte-americano. Assim sendo, o objetivo secundário do presente artigo é investigar e avaliar o holismo de Quine e sua compatibilidade com OC. Na parte final do artigo será́ definida a especificidade do holismo de Wittgenstein, caracterizado como holismo gramatical. (shrink)

O objetivo central do trabalho é analisar a posição evolucionista proposta por Michael Ruse a respeito da ética no âmbito de primeira e de segunda ordem. Para cumprir com este objetivo, inicialmente distinguiremos a posição evolucionista de Ruse, de fundamentação darwiniana, com a posição evolucionista clássica, de fundamentação spenceriana. Mostraremos como Ruse inicialmente reformula a ética evolucionista spenceriana, tornando o âmbito da ética substantiva descritivo, e não mais prescritivo, a partir da compreensão correta do conceito de altruísmo. No âmbito da (...) metaética, mostraremos como Ruse desenvolve uma posição evolucionista sem recair nos problemas clássicos da lei de Hume e da falácia naturalista. Por fim, mostraremos que a metaética darwiniana de Ruse pode ser considerada como um tipo de teoria do erro. Concluiremos que a proposta de ética e metaética darwiniana de Ruse trazem grandes avanços para a discussão, fortalecendo a importância da biologia na investigação tradicionalmente filosófica. Georg Lukács (1885-1971) was one of the most original Marxist philosophers and literary critics of the twentieth century. His work was a major influence on what we now know as critical theory. Almost fifty years after his death, Lukács's legacy has come under attack by right-wing extremists in his native Hungary. Despite efforts to erase his memory, Lukács remains a philosophical gadfly. Theorists, historians, and artists address the precarious futurity of the notion of the future. Not long ago, a melancholic left and a manic neoliberalism seemed to arrive at an awkward consensus: the foreclosure of futurity. Whereas the former mourned the failure of its utopian project, the latter celebrated the triumph of a global marketplace. The radical hope of realizing a singularly different, more equitable future displaced by a belief that the future had already come to pass, limiting post-historical society to (...) an uneventful life of endless accumulation. Today, amidst an abundance of neofuturisms, posthumanisms, futurologies, speculative philosophies and accelerationist scenarios, there is as well an expanding awareness of a looming planetary catastrophe driven by the extractionist logic of capitalism. Despite this return to the future, the temporal horizon of our present moment is perhaps more aptly characterized by the “shrinking future” of just-in-time production, risk management, high-frequency trading, and the futures market. This study empirically tests a sequential mediation model that links ethical leadership with employees’ unethical behaviour. The corruption index for countries is used as the moderator, because it represents both the instrumental ethical climate and the employee displacement of responsibility embedded in society’s ethical standards. A total of 175 participants comprising 41 teams (134 dyads) across 13 countries participated in a dyadic two-wave survey. The findings show that ethical leadership has an indirect influence on the avoidance of unethical behaviour by (...) reducing the instrumental ethical climate and by negating the displacement of individuals’ responsibility. In addition, the results also show that this process is not sensitive to the countries’ corruption levels. Such findings suggest that organizations are less prone to adjust their ethical standards to the environment than is usually expected. Accordingly, ethical leaders of MNCs may be instrumental in counteracting any corruptive pressure in the social environment, and likewise, non-ethical leaders may be a contributing factor to fostering corrupt organizations in a society that otherwise values ethical principles in business. Leadership has become a more popular term than management, even though it is understood that both phenomena represent important organizational behaviors. This paper focuses on empathy in leadership, and presents the findings of a study conducted among business students over the course of 3 years. Finding that empathy consistently ranked lowest in the ratings, the researchers set out to discover the driving motives behind this invariable trend, and conducted a second study to obtain opinions about possible underlying factors. The paper (...) presents the findings of both studies, as well as literature reviews on the differences between management and leadership, a historical overview of leadership, a reflection of 21st century leadership, the ongoing debate on the effects of corporate psychopaths on ethical performance, and scholars’ perception on empathy in corporate leadership. The findings indicate the need for a paradigm shift in corporations as well as business schools in regards to leaders’ required skills, and suggest a proactive approach from business faculty to change the current paradigm. L'obiettivo del presente articolo è l'osservazione storica delle politiche della memoria nel Brasile contemporaneo, con particolare attenzione al periodo tra il 2019 e il 2022 (governo Bolsonaro). O tema da política sobre a vida é marcado por uma mudança na forma de governo exercida na institucionalização do biopoder, especialmente a partir da entrada do capitalismo como elemento balizador da governamentalidade. No presente artigo, o objetivo principal é mostrar como a biopolítica governamental, notadamente proposta pelos estudos de Michel Foucault, nos anos 70, desdobra-se e lastreia a tese da necropolítica de Achille Mbembe e suas implicações práticas na contemporaneidade. Para isso, comparo alguns excertos de textos de Foucault, Fanon, (...) Mbembe, Deleuze, Agamben, entre outros, no intuito de explorar como a biopolítica está presente na lógica de controle social, implementada e refinada tecnologicamente por governos, o que pode levar a diversos movimentos persecutórios e preconceituosos com determinados grupos sociais. Por fim, aponto como tais necropolíticas podem ser identificadas no Brasil atual, especialmente com base em relatórios de violência aqui analisados, estudos sobre desigualdade étnico-racial-social e combate socialmente seletivo no enfrentamento da pandemia da Covid-19, destacando a relevância e a atualidade de se discutir tais conceitos sob perspectiva descolonial. Este artigo analisa, em dois momentos do movimento de ocupação de escolas em São Paulo, que ocorreu em 2015, o encadeamento das ações, discussões, reações e resistências que envolveram a insurgência dos secundaristas, a partir da construção conceitual de “dispositivo” de Foucault e suas derivações para questões comunicacionais. A proposta é observar como as cenas enunciativas insurgentes representadas e narradas pelos estudantes no ato da ocupação da escola e no confronto com a polícia configuram um sujeito político que aponta para (...) um modo de estar no acontecimento. Esse processo, inspirado também no método da igualdade de Rancière, mostra que a narrativa de si se configura como um instrumento político da ação política, fruto do empenho coletivo dos secundaristas, cujo arranjo se transforma em um potente dispositivo interacional. The COVID-19 pandemic challenged countries, regions, schools, and individuals. School closures due to lockdowns forced changes in the teaching practices and the learning support provided to children at home. This study aimed to provide insights on the changes between the first and the second lockdowns in Portugal, concerning remote teaching practices and family support to children's education. A self-report questionnaire was filled by 144 parents of third grade students. The results show that, between the two lockdowns, there was a significant (...) decrease in the amount of support provided at home to school assignments and activities, as well as in the amount of time spent by students in TV broadcasted lessons and in reading training supported by the family. Inversely, families reported a significant increase in the amount of time spent by students in independent reading activities and in the time spent in training reading guided by teachers. The number of synchronous lessons with a teacher and the number of times students trained reading during a synchronous lesson also increased in the second lockdown. Additionally, in the second lockdown, parents perceived synchronous lessons to be more effective at improving their child's reading skills and perceived themselves as more capable of supporting their child in reading acquisition. These findings are used to discuss school responses and remote teaching and learning practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. (shrink)

Scientific pluralism has gained supporters in philosophy of science during the last decades, since it seems to accurately account for the plural and varied development of science. Arguments in defense of robust, non-merely epistemic pluralistic positions can be found in several contemporary philosophical works. According to these positions, to hold pluralism does not suppose to assume an epistemic position regarding truth and a non-realistic view on scientific theories. Monism can be thought as the “natural” opponent of scientific pluralism. In this (...) paper, we will evaluate the alleged rivalry between the two positions, paying special attention to those riskier, ontologically more robust, pluralistic proposals. We will argue that these strongest versions of pluralism fail to offer an alternative to monism: they either changes the topic or hold a weak skepticism that Hegel develops in the Phenomenology of the Spirit. RESUMEN La postulación de la existencia de receptores bioquímicos permite brindar una explicación satisfactoria para muchos procesos biológicos a nivel celular, como, por ejemplo, el mecanismo de acción de la mayoría de las drogas de acción específica. No obstante, el concepto de receptor fue considerado durante mucho tiempo como carente de referente objetivo, e incluso avanzada la segunda mitad del siglo XX aún existía escepticismo acerca de su existencia. A partir del debate filosófico entre realistas y antirrealistas científicos, indagaremos si (...) la cuestión del realismo permite arrojar luz sobre la historia del concepto de receptor bioquímico. Evaluaremos qué posiciones particulares en el marco del debate permiten comprender tanto la evolución del concepto de receptor como la práctica científica sobre los receptores. Argumentaremos que el caso de los receptores puede ser elucidado aceptando un realismo científico de entidades que considera la manipulabilidad como criterio de existencia -siguiendo a Ian Hacking-. Guiará nuestro trabajo una pregunta estrictamente filosófica: ¿existen los receptores bioquímicos? ABSTRACT The postulation of the existence of biochemical receptors provides a satisfactory explanation for many biological processes at the cellular level, such as the mechanisms of action of most drugs with specific action. However, the concept of receptor was long considered as lacking an objective referent, and even into the second half of the 20th century, there was still skepticism about its existence. By means of the philosophical debate between scientific realists and anti-realists, we will investigate whether the question of realism can shed light on the history of the concept of biochemical receptor. We will evaluate which particular positions within the debate allow us to understand both the evolution of the concept of receptor and the scientific practice on receptors. We will argue that the case of receptors can be elucidated by accepting a scientific realism of entities, which considers manipulability as a criterion of existence -following Ian Hacking-. Our work will be guided by a strictly philosophical query: Do biochemical receptors exist? (shrink)

Corrupt political institutions, lack of resources, and gang violence in Central America fuel the influx of asylum-seeking women and children to the United States. Yet, immigrant women and children are still at risk for poor health and violence in the US due to the lack of protection and support. Through a case study of a teenage girl from Honduras living in the US who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend who followed her to the US, we elucidate ways in which the (...) US and Honduras have violated the rights of women and children. As background, we describe the context of US foreign policy towards immigration and the market for illicit drugs; and, in Honduras, the lack of appropriate healthcare, education, and legal protections. We identify human rights–based solutions to protect the rights of women and children and provide recommendations for improvement for the US government and organizations in Honduras. (shrink)

This paper investigates epistemological and ethical implications of the growingavailability of direct-to-consumer genetic testing for the science and society. Direct-toconsumer genetic testing is characterized as the genetic testing sold directly to consumerswithout any assistance from professionals. By offering empowerment and control, companiesconvince consumers to sequence their genome by granting the company access to theirgenetic data in exchange to results that are not always accurate. To which extent doconsumers properly understand the results of their genetic testing? Are consumers aware ofthe possible (...) implications for disclosing genetic information to private companies? I addressthese questions in two steps: firstly, I discuss epistemological implications of thedevelopment of Genomics, understood as a data-intensive science, by delving into thetheoretical commitments of the concept of gene and the notion of circular causality.Secondly, I reflect upon the privacy risks of taking direct-to-consumer genetic testing in adata-rich world. Finally, I draw some conclusions on the possible consequences of direct-toconsumer genetic testing by suggesting key-concepts that may help to clarify the limits andscope of genetic testing. This paper presents a new method - which does not rely on the cut-elimination theorem - for characterizing the provably total functions of certain intuitionistic subsystems of arithmetic. The new method hinges on a realizability argument within an infinitary language. We illustrate the method for the intuitionistic counterpart of Buss's theory Smath image, and we briefly sketch it for the other levels of bounded arithmetic and for the theory IΣ1.
